She passed away peacefully in her home September 29, 2006, at age 52, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah March 6, 1954 to Joseph Emmet and Ethel Gardner Cook. She married her high school sweetheart, Steven Junius Burton, for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple June 29, 1973. Charlene had a way of making things beautiful and appreciating the beauty around her. She loved the outdoors in all aspects, camping, traveling, gardening, flowers, and sunsets. Many of her travels were inspired by her love of history and genealogy. She loved spending time with her family and serving them by using her many talents, some of which include sewing, cooking, quilting, teaching, listening, and showing unconditional love. Her service also extended to the community where she served in the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Mormon Battalion Co. B Ladies Auxiliary, and as an election judge. She also served faithfully in many positions in her ward including Primary president, Gospel Doctrine teacher, Relief Society instructor, Family History consultant, Den Mother, and visiting teacher.

Charlene is survived by her loving husband, Steve; their children, Douglas (Nannette), Tyrone (Aimee), Joseph (Katherine), Brian, Bridget, Clinton, Jeremy, and Evan Burton; their grandchildren, Anya, Isaak, Sydnee, Jessica, and Christopher Burton; mother, Ethel Cook; and siblings, Carolyn (Ray) Jorgensen, Duane (Merlene) Cook, and Kendall Cook. Charlene is preceded in death by her father, Emmet Cook; and brother, Gerald Cook.
