His grandparents, James Littleton Burris and Elizabeth Adeline (Ashmore) Burris made the journey in ox driven wagons from Lawrence Co., TN in 1837 to Pope Co. They were married on 12 Nov 1840, and began the Burris family that now numbers over 300 members in Pope and other Arkansas counties.
James' mother, Malinda J (Moore) Burris, was born in 1854 in Tennessee. After her death, James' father married Mrs. Mattie J (Sibley) Hughey, and helped her raise her sons, Rife and Jerome Hughey to adulthood.
