Ruth E. Forbes, 80, of Iowa City, passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Pioneer Park in Lone Tree. Funeral services for Ruth will be 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at the Lone Tree American Legion. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery. Following the interment, there will be a time of food and fellowship at the American Legion. Visitation for Ruth will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in memory of Ruth. Online condolences for the Forbes family may be sent to www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Ruth Elinor Burr was born on September 22, 1933, in Iowa City, Iowa the daughter of Vernon E. and Hilda (Nelson) Burr. She attended a rural country school and then graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1952. Ruth was united in marriage to Daris “Keith” Forbes on February 14, 1953 in Iowa City, Iowa. Ruth learned how to play the piano while growing up and when they had card club at their house she usually provided the entertainment. She learned how to work along with Keith in the fields. Ruth was very organized with the bookkeeping for Keith’s business and the kids. She cooked many many meals and shuffled men to the fields. Ruth was a member of the Fremont Homemakers, Moose of Iowa City, helped at the Isaac Walton League and enjoyed traveling all over the U.S. and foreign countries with friends, embroidery, gardening, canning and putting together puzzles.

Ruth will be deeply missed by her children, Kevin D. Forbes and his wife, Lisa of Lone Tree and Gwen R. Schmitt and her husband, Gary of Nichols; eight grandchildren, Misty Forbes and fiancé, Kyle Soukup, Angie Kemp and her husband, Nick, Tara Parizek and her husband, John, Nick Schmitt, Alicia Schmitt, Todd Forbes and his wife, Shelly, Michelle Daufeldt and her husband, Matt and Nicki Polito and her husband, Ed; nine great grandchildren, Tanner and Taylor Forbes, Hailey, Spencer and Macy Daufeldt, Bristol and Becker Polito, Kort and McKenna Kemp; step great grandchildren, Bailey and Bryson Polito and Emma and Sarah Soukup; brothers-in law, Loren Forbes and wife, Janet of North Liberty, Lowell Forbes and wife, Linda of Lone Tree; sister-in-law, Betty Forbes of Lone Tree and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Keith; one son, Paul K. Forbes; brothers, Dale Burr and infant brother, Marvin Burr; sister-in-law, Emily Burr, brother-in-law, Gerald Forbes and sister-in-law, Lois Cook and husband, James.
