Birth: unknown
Death: Aug. 7, 1862

Pvt. Burns enlisted on 5/18/1861 and was mustered into Co. "F", 1st N.J. Inf. on 5/25/1861. He was with Gen. McClellan on his initial push toward Richmond in 1862. On 6/27/1862 in the third of a series of battles to be known as the seven days, Robert E. Lee manages to break through Federal lines and follow them to Harrison's Landing, Va. but the Union command seems confident. Confederate officers miss opportunities and fail to take advantage of the enemy's precarious position. The Federals manage to consolidate their army. Rebel general Magruder presses the issue but is greatly outnumbered. Pvt. Burns is one of 6,837 casualties for the north, being severely wounded. He is evacuated to Philadelphia, Pa., but dies on 8/7/1862 at Satterlee hospital.
