JOHN A. (JACK) BURKE Of Castro Valley and a retired Alameda County Superior Court Judge, died January 18, 2005, after a year-and-a-half battle against pancreatic cancer. He was 72 years of age. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Marleen F. Burke, his daughter Terese Burke Klas of Placerville, his son John F. Burke of San Francisco, his daughter Mary Ann (Burke) Rodriggs of Fremont, and his son Timothy F. Burke of Davis, and eleven grandchildren. Mr. Burke had been a deputy and assistant district attorney for the Alameda County District Attorney for nearly 25 years when he was appointed to the then San Leandro-Hayward Municipal Court in December 1984 by Governor George Deukmajian. He was elevated to the Superior Court by operation of law July 31, 1998. A 1950 graduate of St. Joseph's High School, Alameda, Mr. Burke earned his bachelor of arts degree in 1954 from Saint Mary's College, where he was editor of St. Mary's Collegian during his junior and senior years. He next served two years in the U.S. Army, 17 months in Germany. He graduated with a J.D. from Hastings (U.C.) College of Law in 1959. After marriage, he and Marleen settled in Castro Valley and were members of Transfiguration Church since 1961. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Transfiguration, 4000 East Castro Valley Blvd., Castro Valley, on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, 6 p.m., with a reception immediately following in the parish hall.
