Birth: Nov. 9, 1873
Death: May 20, 1962
Tate County
Mississippi, USA

Anna Elizabeth Burford was born 9 November 1874 in Tate County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of William Jasper and Elizabeth Jane Markham Burford who were married in Desoto County, Mississippi on 1 January 1871. She was known by all as Aunt Lizzie.

Although she never married, she had a full life and an extended family. She grew up helping her parents take care of her younger brother and sisters. After her siblings had grown up and left home, she went to live at the Independence School Teachers Home, Tate County in the early 1920's to cook for the teachers.

During the late 1920's and early 1930's she cared for the children of neighbors and friends, including the Anglin's near Bett, the twins of Martin Massey near Cockrum and children of Bruce Hurt at Greenleaf. After the death of her youngest sister, Lucy in 1939, and her husband, Leonard Alvin Ross in 1940, Aunt Lizzie moved to the Ross home in Independence to care for their children. After the Ross children had grown up and moved away from home, Aunt Lizzie spent her remaining days visiting with her sisters, nieces and nephews.

In her later days, needing full time care, she was placed in the Shelby County Nursing Home in Memphis, where she was visited often by her many friends and family. She died on Sunday, March 18, 1962 at the nursing home in Memphis at the age of 87. She was buried 21 March 1962 beside her mother and father at Greenleaf Cemetery.
