Charles was a shoemaker and followed in the family business. At the age of 18, on Aug. 5, 1862, he enlisted as a Private in Company I, Massachusetts 3rd Cavalry Regiment. He mustered out on May 20, 1865, thus serving through much of the Civil War. He married Harriet Quigly Abbott in North Reading, Massachusetts on July 18, 1974. Harriet and Charles were the parents of three children, Arthur Abbott Burditt, Alice Mary Stacy, and Charles Franklin.
