Thomas P. Burdett--Died, at the residence of his father, in Wilkes county, Ga., on the 25th of January, Thomas P. Burdett, Jun., in the twenty-second year of his age.
The subject of this notice was the eldest child of Thomas P. and Martha Burdett. He entered the Sophmore class in Mercer University in the fall of '72, and was among the victims of the terrible disease with which that institution was lately visited. After the outbreak of meningitis among the students, he remained in Macon, waiting upon his dying comrades, until compelled by the Faculty to leave. He started home perfectly well, but was taken violently ill on the way, and died in thirty-six hours after reaching his home. Thus ended the career of a youth of unusual promise. Few young men combine in their characters a greater number of superior excellencies. Few young persons are blessed with so many noble habits as he was. His superior intellect, cheerful, winning disposition, genial and sympathetic nature, large, generous heart, warm, practical piety, made him a model young man. He had been a member of the Baptist Church for nearly two years, and during that time religion had been his "chief concern." His religion pervaded and directed his whole life, and bespoke him a child of God. To know him was to love him. He was one of those lovely, exemplary characters for the gift of whom a whole community feels a common gratitude. The minister at his funeral, expressed the sentiment of every heart of a large circle of acquaintances when he said "I thank God for him--for his example, his influence, his life. I thank God that such a young man has been permitted to grow up in our community." A young man so pious, so gifted, so enriched with good habits could not but be the subject of many bright hopes. Not only his immediate family, but hundreds of others contemplated his future with the highest anticipations. But God in His infinite wisdom, has seen proper to blight these high expectations by removing him, whom He had so eminently fitted for usefulness, upon the very threshold of manhood. A dispensation so sad, so painful, could not but produce a profound sense of grief throughout the community. Every heart was wrung by this afflictive event. Parents, brothers and sisters, and the neighborhood at large, have suffered a disappointment, the remembrance of which will draw sighs and tears for years to come. May the God of all comfort, who alone can comfort, console the bereaved in this their deep sorrow.
