Leonard Perry Bump, 36, who resided in a trailer in Hoosick, N.Y., was found by his father, Noyes Bump, dead on the couch in his living room Tuesday afternoon with a .22 caliber rifle nearby.
Rensselaer County Medical Examiner Dr. James Barrett said death occurred between 2 and 5 pm and was due to a self-inflicted gun wound to the temple. Investigating officers were Robert Ansow and John Halloran of the Center Brunswick division of the New York State Police, who said a suicide note was found at the scene.
A native of Bennington, the deceased was born here Oct 27, 1938, received his education in the schools of Bennington and Hoosick Falls, and had been employed as an auto mechanic for his father. He was a graduate of Glens Falls Technical School, attended the University of New York, and prior to joining his father, worked at Hogan's Garage in Bennington.
In addition to his father, he leaves two sons, Leonard and Douglas, two daughters, Juanita and Angel, all of Bennington; his mother, Lydia (Young) Bump; two brothers, Lawrence of Hoosick Falls and Marshall of Louisianna; three sisters, Mrs. Norma Reagan of Bennington, Mrs. LeBetta Elliot of Cambridge, N.Y., and Mrs. Patricia Howard of Westfield, Mass.; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be at 11 Friday morning at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington by the R. Floyd I. La Bombard, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bennington. Entombment will follow in Park Lawn Cemetery vault, pending burial in the spring in the Center Shaftsbury Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Thursday.
