Albert Ralph "AR" Bawden married Mabelle Maude Buford on 15 Oct 1913 in her sister's home, George and Ella Schwenker in Rock Island, Rock Island, IL, dtrs of John R. and Mathilda Okerberg Buford b 14 Apr 1886 in Moline, Rock Island, IL. Mabelle graduated from Moline High School. She was a member of Davenport's First Presbyterian Church, Women's Club, and the Ladies of the Davenport Rotary Club. She died 6 Nov 1940 in Davenport of breast cancer and is buried in Oakdale's Public Mausoleum.
He was the oldest child of Davenport parents George Washington and Jennie Eldridge Bawden. He was born in Muscatine, Muscatine, IA because of George's law practice there. The family moved back to Davenport in 1895 where Albert graduated from Davenport (Central) High School in 1905, two months after his father's death.
Following graduation, he began his career as a clerk with First National Bank of Davenport where he worked until he purchased the newsstand at the I & I Interurban Station at 217 Brady St.
In 1908 his brother [George] Ray, and in 1912, another brother Harry joined him in the business.
Albert married next Margaret Theresa "Tess" Hart in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA. She was born 26 Feb 1904 in Davenport to Leonard and Mary Mulvahill Hart, a descendant of Peter and Mary Margaret Dougherty Hart who came to Davenport from Ireland with their children in 1854. "Tess" graduated from Davenport's Smart Jr. High (then West Intermediate School), then from Elliott Fisher Bookkeeping/Machine School in Rock Island, IL. She worked in the office of Davenport Locomotive Works before becoming bookkeeper and cashier at Bawden Bros. Inc.
Albert watched the business grow from a small newsstand in the interurban waiting room into the photoengraving and printing firm/photography studio of Bawden Bros., Inc. He was president at his death. He was director of the Davenport Chamber of Commerce, president of the Davenport Rotary 1933-34. In 1942 he was elected ruling elder at Davenport's First Presbyterian Church where he was active on the bi-centennial celebration.
Tess died 12 Aug 1991 in St. John's Hospital, Springfield, IL near her son Ralph Eldridge and his family. She is buried in Davenport's Mt. Calvary Cemetery. (see entry)
