Mary was the daughter of Franklin Oscar Kuehner and Katherine Amelia Kline. She lived with her Kuehner grandparents in her teens in Weatherly, Pennsylvania, and then with her father in Newark, New Jersey. After high school she worked as a clerk at the Prudential Insurance Company. She cut her hair in the latest flapper fashion and met her future husband, Clifford W. Buck, at a dance in Newark. They were married June 6, 1924 in Montclair, New Jersey. Mary was an accomplished pianist and played the organ at her church. She was an avid reader, dedicated gardener, great cook, and liked to play bridge and travel.
