Dewey was the adopted son of of Ernest BUCHER and Sophia HANSEN. He married Melissa MELIN on 3 August 1946, in Manistee.
He grew up in Manistee, helping his parents with the operation of the family farm, BUCHER Dairy, and graduated from Manistee High School in 1941. After extensive officer and specialty training, he served in the U. S. Navy as a gunnery officer on destroyers during and after World War II as a Lt. JG, and was honorably discharged in 1946. Dewey often spoke with quiet pride of his service to his country as one of the highlights of his life.
Dewey married his high school sweetheart, Melissa.They then made their home in East Lansing, where he completed his education at Michigan State College, earning a degree in Chemical Engineering, and he and Melissa began their family, which grew to include seven children. Dewey then started his lifelong career in the salt industry at Morton Salt Company in Manistee, while Melissa supported him as wife, mother and homemaker. His career in the salt industry took the growing family to Kansas, North Dakota, back to Michigan, and finally to Kansas again, where he retired in 1989. During these retirement years, he and Melissa fulfilled her dreams of breeding and raising horses. They also gave a loving home to many cats, dogs and other animals. During his working and retirement years, Dewey was active in many civic organizations, veterans organizations and in their churches.
In 2003, Dewey and Melissa moved to the Traverse City area to be near family.
Funeral services were held on 2 December 2009, at Jowett Family Funeral Home, Benzonia, Michigan.
Memorial gifts were suggested to Boys Town of Omaha, Nebraska, a favorite charity of Dewey's, as he was orphaned as a child, the Veterans organization of the donor's choice or Munson Hospice.
