Esther M. Toomey, 88, of Schuylkill Haven, died Wednesday at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, where she was a patient since Saturday.
Born in Philadelphia, Dec. 15, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Elizabeth Wythe Bubeck.
She was the widow of Vincent Toomey, who died in 1974.
She was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1938. She was a nurse for 43 years, having worked at Good Samaritan Hospital Maternity, York Terrace, Rest Haven and as a private nurse.
She served in the Army during World War II. She served as a first lieutenant as part of the 20th General Hospital Unit stationed in China, Burma and India. She cared for soldiers who worked on the construction of the Ledo Road in Burma. She also cared for Lord Mountbatten and Madame Chiang Kai Shek. Her unit developed the concept of intestine care medicine. She contracted malaria while overseas.
She was a member of First United Church of Christ, Schuylkill Haven.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Eileen, who died in 1997.
Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Collins, Ellicot City, Md.; a son, Vincent Toomey, Schuylkill Haven; two sisters, Margaret Davis, Pottsville, and Phyllis Frantz, Florida; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Schuylkill Memorial Park, Schuylkill Haven, with the Rev. Rose Hoffman officiating. The family requests donations to the American Cancer Society Schuylkill Unit, 16 N. Fourth St., Minersville, PA 17954, or the American Heart Association, West Lawn Professional Plaza, Building A, Suite 10, 25 Stevens Ave., West Lawn, PA 19609.
