Alvia, the son of Willie G. Bryant and Mamie C. Bryant of Channelview TX enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 28, 1966 in Houston TX. He arrived in Vietnam on October 17, 1967 and was assigned to Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On the north side of the Cu De River near the Nam O Bridge in Hoa Vang preparations were being made to set up the defensive perimeter for the night. The squad leader Cpl Bryant decided to change the location of a M18A1 claymore mine neglecting to disarm the firing device. As he was moving the mine it detonated killing Cpl Bryant as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds.
