Our precious mother and grandmother, Ethel D. Berry, 92, of Evansville, Indiana, died at St. Mary's Medical Center at 4:30 a.m. on Monday, July 31, 2006, following complications from a medical procedure. Ethel was born the second child of Bertran and Queen May Bryan in Madisonville, Kentucky, on December 13, 1913.

Ethel was married to Willett M. Berry, who preceded Ethel in death on July 30, 1990. They were married 50 years. Ethel and Willett resided in Madisonville, Kentucky, until 1942, at which time they relocated to Evansville, Indiana. In 1959, they relocated to Southern California, where they resided until their retirement in 1978.

Ethel began her 36 year career as a meat processor at Weil Packing Company in Evansville. She continued her career in Southern California and belonged to the United Food and Commercial Workers Unions, Local 0324. Through the Union, she worked for A&P, Kroger, and Market Basket groceries.

Ethel was a member of Vann Avenue Baptist Church. She loved the Lord and took every opportunity she could to witness to others about the Lord, up to the very end of her life. She loved her family and all of the family get togethers. It was important to her to have all of her family together. She was a terrific cook and baker. She loved flowers and enjoyed gardening and especially had a gift for growing beautiful roses. She adored her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and always prayed for their safety. She loved dogs and cats and her "grand dogs" LaFette, Bailey, and Emge who brought her much joy and happiness in her later years.

Ethel was preceded in death by son, Edward; granddaughter Lisa; father and mother, Bert and Queen; sisters, Aretta and Elsie; and brother, Presley.

Ethel is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Geraldine and Charles Gass. She is also survived by grandchildren, Shawnna Gerding and husband, Phil, Marty Gass and wife, Carol, Lynda Merrill and husband, Jeff, Steve Gass, and the children of her son, Ed and their families, Crinna Ann, Eddie, and Darlene. Ethel's great-grandchildren are Brian Gerding, Kevin and Alex Gass, Morgan and Kaden Merrill. Ethel is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Brother Nall and the Vann Avenue Baptist Church prayer groups and membership for their prayers, support, and encouragement during the past painful week.
