Obituary for Annie Atterberry Lavender Bruce in The Roswell Daily Record Newspaper (Roswell, Chaves Co., New Mexico) published Friday, February 18, 1955:

Mrs. Annie Bruce Dies in El Paso; Rites to Be Here

Rites for Mrs. Annie A. Bruce, 66, mother of Sgt. Harvey Bruce of Walker Air Force Base, will be conducted at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Ballard Chapel by Chaplain Patterson. Burial will be in South Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Bruce died Tuesday night at William Beaumont Hospital in El Paso, to which she had been admitted two weeks prior.

She had lived in Roswell the last year with her son at 2310 N. Texas Ave. Mrs. Bruce came to Roswell from San Antonio.

Mrs. Bruce was born in Round Rock, Ark., grew up in Blevins in the same state, married Dr. G. C. Bruce in Hot Springs.

A registered nurse, she worked with her husband for 30 years in Amarillo and the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Dr. Bruce died in 1949.

Mrs. Bruce was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors, in addition to the son stated at Walker, are another son Sgt. Grover C. Bruce, Lowrey Base, Denver; five brothers and four sisters.
---
Note: Obituary states she was born in Round Rock, Ark. This should be "Round Rock, Texas", as shown on her death certificate. Annie married Dr. Grover C. Bruce in Saline Co., Arkansas, not Hot Springs (Garland Co.) Arkansas as shown in the obit. The surviving siblings included 2 brothers & the rest were half or step siblings.

Annie Atterberry was the daughter of Thomas B. Atterberry & Rosa Ann "Rosie" Morgan. Annie was raised in Blevins, Hempstead Co., Arkansas after her mother married William Y. Yokem in 1895.

Annie first married Edward Dorsey "Ed" Lavender on Feb. 3, 1907 in Hempstead Co., Arkansas. They divorced on Sept. 4, 1916 in Hempstead Co., Arkansas. There were no children.

Annie then married Dr. Grover Cleveland Bruce on March 5, 1925 in Saline Co., Arkansas. It was a 2nd marriage for both. They had 2 sons born to them in Amarillo, Texas: Harvey & Grover, Jr.

Annie & Grover Bruce divorced about 1937 in Texas.

Annie was probably born in Austin, Travis Co., Texas. Annie's birth place was listed as Round Rock, Texas (Williamson Co.) by the informant for her death certificate. This is very near to Austin. Annie listed her birth place as Austin, Texas on her son Harvey Thomas Bruce's birth certificate. Austin was also the birthplace for her 2 brothers, Joe & William Atterberry, and for several of her step-siblings.
