The Chico Enterprise, Chico, CA, Wednesday, April 28, 1915: "Clarence Bruce Buried. The funeral of Clarence Clay Bruce, 23-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bruce of Lotus street, Chapmantown, who died Monday evening from pneumonia caused by a gunshot wound inflicted by Joseph Shoemaker, was held from the family home this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. O.E. Hart of the First Presbyterian church officiated and interment was made in the Chico cemetery."

Tragedy has stalked the Bruce family here for years it was revealed today by friends and family. No less than six members of the family,, all cousins, have met violent deaths.
"Bud Bruce, a cousin of Police Officer C.J. Bruce killed last night, was shot to death in Gridley many years ago by a man named Shumaker.
"Stanley Bruce, another cousin, was electrocuted while working for a power company in Arizona following the trouble on the Mexican border.
"Karl Bruce, a cousin was killed near Nord a few years ago by a club wielded by Lawrence Bennett.
"Herman, another cousin, was killed in a gun battle with his brother-in-law, Clarence White, a few years ago at the Bruce home on Park Avenue.
"Still another cousin known as "Fatty" Williams, and a brother of Marcus Williams, who attempted to prevent the shooting of Officer Bruce last night, was killed by a box car on the Butte county railroad south of town a few years ago.
