Obituary: (IL Journal Register - 7 March 1935)
Taylorville, March 6--Mrs. Anna Broy, 29, wife of Daniel Broy, died at 1:50 o'clock this afternoon at the St. Vincent hospital from burns received at 8:15 o'clock this morning when a can, from which she was pouring kerosene into the heating stove, exploded and ignited her clothing.
Mrs. Broy, who was planning to do the family washing, had started a fire in the heater earlier in the morning. She also had a fire in the kitchen range which was sufficient to keep the house warm. When it started raining she decided that she would have to dry her washing in the house. The fire in the heater had apparently burned out. She was to the kitchen and got a gallon can of kerosene and started pouring it into the stove. A spark from the smouldering fire ignited the kerosene, causing it to explode. The explosion blew the can to pieces, throwing the flaming liquid over the woman's clothing.
Tom Broy, her brother-in-law, grabbed a quilt from the day bed, a few feet from the stove, where the Broy children were sleeping, and wrapped it around Mrs. Broy in an effort to extinguish the blaze.
Mrs. Broy was terribly burned from her neck to her knees. Her face was partically burned and her hair singed. Flesh fell from her arms, hands and body after she was taken to the hospital.
Only a small portion of the linoleum on the living room floor was burned. No other damage was done to the house.
Mr. and Mrs. Broy came to the city from West Frankfort about a year ago. Mr. Broy has been employed at Peabody mine No. 8 at Tovey.
Surviving her is her husband, her parents, who reside in West Frankfort, and three, children, namely: Junior, 10; Maxine, 8, and Kathleen, 4.
Short funeral services will be held at the home at 9:30 o'clock Thursday morning. The body will then be taken to West Frankfort for funeral services and burial on Friday.
