The son of John B. & Nancy Brownawell, in 1860 he was a cabinet maker living in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Carlisle August 5, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. A, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry, but wounded in action at the battle of Antietam, most likely at Bloody Lane, and died the following day.
