|Death: ||Feb. 2, 1666|
"One merchant's memorial takes us back to the times of Charles II. It covers the dust of John Brown, who died 2d February 1666 — the year of the Pentland rising, when Dumfries was occupied by "rebel" Covenanters. On the same stone appear the name of Samuel Affleck, mason, died 28th February 1804, aged 65, and that of his spouse, Agnes Lithgow."
