MRS. FRANK J. BROWN

Elva Lorena Chase, the oldest daughter of Fred W. and Anna M. Chase, was born in Whitingham, Vermont, on April 19, 1876, and died in Pawnee City on November 18, 1941, at the age of 65 years, 6 months, and 29 days.

In 1885 the Chase family came to Nebraska and lived near Violet, in Pawnee county, until 1893, when they traveled by covered wagon to Norton county, Kansas. After living there for eighteen months and being starved out by drouth, they returned to Pawnee county.

After completing her education, Elva taught school for several years in Kansas and Pawnee county. She was such a resourceful person that she did many things beside teach. Driving a one horse cart, she went every day to her school several miles out in the cuntry from Densmore, Kansas, and in the afternoon returned to town to look after the Densmore station, so that she might increase her income and help her family. Her work was not always for pay, or for any reward, but if there was a death in the neighorhood, or sickness or trouble of any kind, she was always there, ready to be of service.

On December 24, 1896, she was united in marriage to Frank J. Brown, and this union was blessed with three children, two girls and one boy. On January 6, 1895, she was received into the Methodist church at Pawnee City by the Rev. J. H. Presson, and after her marriage she transferred to the United Brethren church south of Pawnee City.

The passing of Mrs. Brown takes from our community a woman of outstanding christian character. She lived a consistent and useful christian life and her record of loving christian service will always be a memorial to her. She was a good Bible student, she loved God's Word, and was also a faithful worker in the church. Duringher sickness, her christian faith was manifested in the serenity of her spirit and the rich contentment of her mind. She bore patiently her cross of suffering, and when her well-rounded life came to its close, it was like the ending of a well-spent day when the tired worker seeks rest and the western sky is filled with the crimson glory of the setting sun, and there is peace. So the soul of Elva Brown sank to slumber to awake in the new morning of an eternal day.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, her two daughters, Esther, of Pawnee City, and Mary, of Grand Island, Nebr., and her son, Clifford, of Pawnee City, also six brothers and one sister and a host of friends.

The funeral service was held on Thursday, Novenber 20, at the Methodist church, Rev. W. N. Wallis officiating. Burial was in the Pawnee City cemetery.
