Naomi Ethel Traw was the daughter of John Traw and Sarah Fine Gideon. She was born 20 September 1877 in Camden County, Missouri. Ethel, as she was known, married William "Willie" Alfred Brown, Jr. on 25 December 1898 at Sunnyside Christian Church in Camden County. Together they had five children, three of whom died very young -- twin daughters, Elma and Alma, who died at birth, and Thelma Ruth, who died at 3 of whooping cough. Her surviving children were Murl Enloe Brown and Inez Marie Brown.

Ethel's husband, Willie, died in 1951, and she died the following year on 15 June, 1952 at her sister's home, while visiting her daughter, Marie Mack, in St. Louis and her sister, Tempe Traw Fleming, at Valley Paris, St. Louis County, Missouri.

Ethel was a member of the Sunnyside Christian Church in the Wet Glaize Community.
