Birth: Jun. 11, 1844
Death: Sep. 20, 1940

Born June 11 1844 in Ohio, son of John T. Brown. Moved to Sheldon in Vernon County Missouri at an early age with his family. A gang of men who were terrorizing homesteaders of the area by killing and driving families from their homes, killed John's father and scattered the family. At the age of 15, John joined William Quantrill's band and took part in the border warfare during the Civil War. He was at Lawrence, Kansas raid in retaliation for the Redlegs and Jayhawkers actions. After the war he returned to Vernon County and settled near the home from which his family had been driven. He married Mattie Gilmore and they had a son and two daughters. He died September 20 1940 at the home of a granddaughter in Sheldon Mo. (taken from "Branded as Rebels" by Joanne C. Eakin & Honald R Hale)
