Archie Thomas Brown, 93, of Roanoke, went to be with his Lord Tuesday evening, May 2, 2006 after a lengthy illness. Archie was born in Wirtz, Va. a son of the late Thomas N. and Victoria Smith Brown. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Estelle Wilson, Gladys Byrd and Dotsie Dillon; and his dear mother-in-law, Mabel D. Creasy. Archie retired from Norfolk & Western Railway after 38 years service as a yard conductor. During World War II he had been classified 1A and called into service, but then received notice that he had been reclassified because of the essential nature of his job with the railroad. Archie was a charter member of Colonial Avenue Baptist Church and was instrumental in the founding, growth and development of the church. He served in many capacities including deacon, chairman of deacons, pastor search committees, trustee, volunteer treasurer and Sunday School superintendent; but he will be remembered most for his strong commitment to the visitation ministry. Many members today are members because of Archie and his visitation. Archie was also involved in the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association where he served on the Board of Ordination Committee. Archie will be remembered for his kind and humble spirit, Surviving is his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Madaline Creasy Brown; his daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Buck Conner of Roanoke, Bonnie and Randy Broadway of Concord, N.C.; his sister, Era Lumsden of Rocky Mount; his brother, Clyde Brown and wife, Dorothy of Glade Hill; his grandchildren, Chad Conner and wife, Shannon of Raleigh, N.C., Todd Conner and wife, Tonya of Roanoke, Remington and Ryan Holland of Concord, N.C.; his great-grandchildren, Caroline and Barrett Conner, and Peyton Conner; his brother-in-law, Bobby Creasy of Roanoke; his sisters-in-law, Christine Creasy of Roanoke, Terrie Creasy of Temple Hills, Md.; and several nieces, nephews and other loved family members and many dear friends. Family and friends will celebrate his life and his going home to meet his Lord at Colonial Avenue Baptist Church (the church that he loved) Friday, May 5, 2006, 11 a.m. with Dr. Jeffrey W. Scott and the Rev. Branan G. Thompson officiating. Interment in Fair View Cemetery. The family wishes to express appreciation for the special care given to Archie by Dr. Robert Seamon, the nursing staff at South Roanoke Nursing Home and the nursing staff of 11 West at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and also for the many acts of kindness shown by special friends. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to remember Archie with gifts to the Global Missions Ministry of Colonial Avenue Baptist Church. Visitation with the family will be at Oakey's South Chapel, Thursday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A guiding principle for Archie's life would be found in Proverbs 11 verse 3, "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise"
