JOHN BROWN AND HIS DESCENDANTS by Jeanne E. Brown Killick 23 January 2020:
JOHN BROWN, son of MR. and MRS. JOSEPH BROWN, was born in 1805 in PA. John was married to CATHERINE JOHNSTON 22-NOV-1825 in Columbiana County, OH, by David King, JP. CATHERINE was born about 1810 in NY. Her father may be JACOB JOHNSTON of West Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. Further research is required.

The 1830 Federal Census (Roll #128, p. 390 [518]), finds JOHN (age 20-30) and CATHERINE (age 20-30) and two daughters, URETTA and ELLEN (both under 5 years of age], in West Twp, Columbiana Co., OH. On the same page is a THOMAS GIBSON and JACOB JONSTON (Catherine's father?). Thomas Gibson and Jacob Johnson are both enumerated in West Twp in 1820, p. 036.

On May 3, 1993, David Marshall, a resident and genealogist of Holmes County, Ohio, located two consecutive deeds in Deed Book 12 at the Holmes County Court House. The first deed was executed 7-NOV-1837 for a parcel of land in Section 17, Range 9, Section 8. At that time, JOHN BROWN was residing in Columbiana County, OH. On 10-NOV-1840, JOHN purchased an additional 40 acres in Section 17. David Marshall then located the tax records for Holmes County, OH, which show that in 1838, JOHN paid tax on one horse and one cow.

The 1840 Federal Census (Roll #404, page 261), finds JOHN and his family living in Richland Twp, Holmes County, OH, on the properties he had purchased in 1837 and 1840.

At the time of the 1850 Federal Census, Roll #696, page 252, (61-62), JOHN and his family were still living in Richland Township, five families away from his brother, HENRY (56-57). The value of JOHN's real estate was $1,200.00. Holmes County Deed Book 12, page 363, shows that JOHN and CATHERINE sold JOHN's brother, HENRY, 40 acres of their land in 1842.

At the time of the 1860 Federal Census (Roll #989, page 270, (151-151), the value of JOHN's real estate was $2,500.00. There were two young children listed in his household: JOHN BROWN, age 2, born OH; and AARON STROUSE, 4 months, born OH. Perhaps JOHN BROWN, age 2, belonged to one of JOHN and CATHERINE's daughters (ELLEN or SARAH) who were still at home in 1860. AARON STROUSE was the infant son of JOHN and CATHERINE's daughter, BARBARA, and JOHN STROUSE, son of GEORGE STROUSE SR.

JOHN BROWN died 18-APR-1870 at 65 years of age in Coshocton County, OH. It appears that CATHERINE died prior to 27-OCT-1863. Both JOHN and CATHERINE (JOHNSTON) BROWN are believed to be buried in the Brown Cemetery, Richland Twp, Holmes County, OH. After CATHERINE's death, JOHN married MRS. MARGARET DOWDLE 27-OCT-1863 in Coshocton County, OH. JOHN and MARGARET DOWDLE BROWN had two children: MARGARET BROWN, born about 1864; and ANDREW BROWN, born about 1866. We located both of these children's background information in 2020.

As stated earlier, AARON STROUSE was enumerated in the household of JOHN and CATHERINE (JOHNSTON) BROWN, his grandparents, in the 1860 Federal Census as being four months of age as of 1-JUL-1860 which indicates that he was born in February of 1860. As URETTA did not die until 19-MAR-1862 and gave birth to JACOB T. STROUSE 12-AUG-1860, it would be impossible for AARON to be her child. JACOB T. died 18-FEB-1861 at 6 months and 6 days and is buried in the Tiverton Baptist Cemetery, Tiverton Twp, Coshocton County, Ohio, next to his mother, URETTA, and his sister, PHEDORA L.

The 1870 Federal Census record (Roll #1229, p. 321B) was located for JOHN and BARBARA (BROWN) STROUSE, showing that they were living in Jefferson Twp, Knox County, OH, (post office: Jelloway), probably in the same home where URETTA had lived with JOHN and her children. At the time of that Census, JOHN was a grocer, his real estate was valued at $4,000.00 and his personal property was valued at $1,000.00.
