Funeral held for Alberta B. Belliston


Alberta Wilkins Brown Belliston, 98, of Nephi, died Nov. 23 in Modesto, Calif.


Funeral services were held Monday in Nephi. Interment was at the Vine Bluff Cemetery.


Mrs. Belliston was born July 16, 1885 in Wadsworth, Medina County, Ohio to Walter Ingalls and Mary Emily Lytle Brown. Her father was the founder of Nephi High School.


She received her early schooling in Nephi, and later attended Collegiate Institute in Salt Lake City and graduated from Salt Lake High School. She attended Lake Erie College in Painsville, Ohio, and received her bachelor of arts degree in Latin, Greek, and math from Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts. Following her graduation, she taught at Jordan High School, Eureka High School, and Spanish Fork High School.


She married James Leslie Belliston Oct. 15, 1912. He died Feb. 20, 1924.


Mrs. Belliston was a former member and president of the Ladies Literary Club, and was a president and charter member of the Twentieth Century Club and the Social Neighbors Club of Nephi.


She served from 1940 to 1956 as director of the Commercial Bank of Nephi, which later became First Security Bank. In 1974, Mrs. Belliston was honored by state and national women's clubs as the first woman bank director in Utah.


She was a member of Lybia Temple No. 32 of the Daughters of the Nile for 54 years. She was a member of the Spirit of Libery Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for over 60 years. Mrs. Belliston also served as chairman of Red Cross, heart, and cancer fund drives in Nephi for many years, and as chairman for women in civil defense in five counties for five years.


She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.


Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Howard J. (Rosemary) Smith of Modesto, Calif.; two sons, Walter James Belliston of San Diego, Calif., and Allen E. (Spud) Belliston of Nephi; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
