Saturday services held for Velva Melear Ashton
Funeral services for Velva Melear Ashton, 88, were at 10 a.m. Saturday in the First Christian Church with the Rev. Clyde Blakely, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in the City of Levelland Cemetery under the direction of George C. Price Funeral Directors.
She died at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday in the Lubbock Methodist Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Greenville and moved to Levelland in 1936 from Seymour. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She married John Melear on Jan. 28, 1922 in Seymour. He preceded her in death in 1932. She married Tom Ashton on July 28, 1962. He preceded her in death on April 27, 1985. She was also preceded in death by a son, Karl Ray Melear, in 1931. She was a retired beautician.
Survivors include a son, J.W. Melear; a daughter, Margaret Melear Thornton; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The pallbearers were her grandsons and great-grandsons, Johnny Thorton, Wesley Thornton, Jimmy Melear, Richard Angus, Doug Thornton and Jay Thornton.
