~MY ANCESTOR~

The daughter of JERAD & HANNAH (HILLS) SPENCER, she married first, THOMAS BROOKS, in 1662 in Haddam, CT. and second, Thomas Shaylor of Haddam in 1673. Thomas Shaylor was lost at sea while sailing to the West Indies in 1692.

Alice, although she was still living, was passed over in her father's will and her father, instead, gave part of his "landed estate" to her daughter, Alice Brooks, "daughter of his daughter Brooks".

According to the will of Alice's brother, John Spencer, dated August 3, 1682, Thomas Brooks, the son of Thomas & Alice Brooks was adopted by John at 4 years of age. Now 18 years of age, Thomas was bequeathed 20 shillings by John. John's sister, Alice Brooks Shaylor, was also given 20 shillings for her attendance during his illness.

The children of Thomas & Alice Brooks:
SARAH (BROOKS) LORD, my ancestor
Thomas Brooks
Mary Brooks
Alice Brooks (born after her father's death)

The children of Thomas & Alice Shaylor:
Thomas Shaylor
Abel Shaylor
Timothy Shaylor
Anna (Shaylor) Clark

Note: All of Gerard's children were born in Lynn, Mass. before Gerard moved his family to Haddam, Conn. about 1658. Haddam, the first settlement south of Hartford, was set up about 1657 or thereabouts. East Haddam came later so not possible that Marah was born in East Haddam. Correct birth place would be in Lynn, Mass.
