Suburban Police Chief Discovers Parents' Murder-Suicide
8:56 a.m. CDT October 24, 2006
McCOOK, Ill. - A suburban Cook County police chief made a sad, gruesome discovery this weekend: the bodies of his parents in their home, authorities said. The bodies of the couple, identified as Dorothy and Walter Babich, both 75, were discovered Sunday afternoon at their McCook home at 4935 Riverside Drive, according to police and the medical examiner's office.
Their son, Daniel Babich, chief of the neighboring Lyons Police Department, made the discovery Sunday afternoon, according to police reports. He could not be reached for comment Monday.
The woman was stabbed and the man used a shotgun to kill himself in what the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said appeared to be a homicide-suicide.
A preliminary police investigation indicates the husband stabbed his wife multiple times before he shot himself with a shotgun sometime between Friday and Sunday, according to a release from McCook police.
The couple wer pronounced dead at the scene at 5:25 p.m. Sunday, according to a medical examiner's office spokesman.
An autopsy conducted Monday determined the woman died of multiple stab and incise wounds. Her husband's autopsy was pending police investigation, according to the report.
McCook police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 708-447-1234.
Cremated, Ashes given to family or friend.
