A. D. Brockman, Prominent Banker Here, Dies

Albert Davis (A. D.) Brockman, 70, prominent Kingsport banker and civic and church leader died at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday in Holston Valley Community Hospital.

Brockman was stricken at his home Sunday night and underwent lengthy heart surgery immediately. Up until about two weeks ago he appeared to be in good health, associates said.

A native of Charlottesville, Va., Brockman came to Kingsport from Marion, Va., in 1915 as cashier of the First National Bank. Later he was president of the bank for 16 years, from 1942 to 1958.

At the time of his death he was chairman of the advisory board of the First National Bank of Sullivan County. He was a banker for 49 years.

Brockman was a past president of the Tennessee Bankers Association and member of the association's executive council.

He was also secretary, treasurer and director of the Center Street Corp., and vice president and director of the Kingsport Federal Savings and Loan Association.

For 25 years, from 1923 to 1948, Brockman was chairman of the Kingsport Board of Education. He was also secretary-treasurer of Tri-City Airport Commission for 10 years.

He was a past presiden tof the Kingsport Kiwanis Club, a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner.

Brockman was a member of the Broad Street Methodist Church and served as chairman of the board of stewards for 12 years. At the time of his death he was serving as a trustee of the church.

Brockman was married to the former Joyce Eckhart who survives him. In addition he is survived by:

Two daughters, Mrs. Will S. George Jr., Kingsport and Mrs. Jay Y. Gillenwater, Woodbury, N. J.; two sons, James A. Brockman, Maitland, Fla. and Richard D. Brockman, Cincinnati, Ohio; four sisters, Mrs. Annie B. Hutton, Hampton, Va., Mrs. Bessie B. Sutter, Springfield, Ohio, Mrs. J. D. White, Kingsport, and Miss Virginia Brockman, Bristol, Tenn.; one brother, James B. Brockman, Marion, Va., and 17 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday at 3 p.m., at the Broad Street Methodist Church with Dr. Frank Porter and Rev. Ted Will officiating.

The body will be taken from Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home to the church one hour before funeral services. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1122 Watauga Street, and the funeral home.
