White River Jct., VT – Lionel "Red" Brochu, 86, passed away early Thursday morning, May 9, 2013 at the Brookside Nursing Home in White River Jct., VT. He was born July 30, 1926 in Greensboro Bend, VT the son of Joseph and Roseabelle (Demars) Brochu. He graduated from St. Edmunds High School of Swanton, VT in 1944 and St. Thomas Seminary of Simsbury, CT in 1945. He served three years in the US Army at the end of World War II. After the service he attended the University of Vermont graduating in 1951. In October of 1956 he married Shirley Larrabee. They resided in Hardwick, VT where they lived most of their married life. Red entered the U.S. Postal Service in 1958 serving in Hardwick, VT office and then later at the White River Jct. Office, retiring in 1986 as the Director of Customer Service. They moved to White River Jct. to be near Red's work. He was a life member of the American Legion, the VFW and the Elks Club where he served as Vermont State President 1990/1991. He was also an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus of Hardwick. Red was also a member of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church of White River Jct.

He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley, who died July 12, 2009, his parents, brothers, Albert and John and infant sister Mary Claire, sister-in-law, Darlene Brochu, brothers-in-law, Michael Brochu; Larry, Earl and Robert Larrabee, as well as brother-in-law James Larrabee and his wife Theresa. He is survived by his son William and his companion Lori Pratte of Springfield, MA, his daughter, Susan and her husband Douglas Plummer of Plainfield, NH, five grandsons, Christopher, Jonathan, and Matthew Hamilton, Nathan and Sean Plummer, a sister Jeanette Brochu of Hardwick, VT. He is also survived by his Aunt Hazel Demars and Uncle Frank Philbrook as well as Cousins James and Thomas Philbrook. Brothers-in-law and their spouses; Richard and Terri Larrabee, Dennis and Betty Larrabee, Garey and Jane Larrabee, Sisters-in-law, Patricia Larrabee, Dorothy Larrabee, Irene Larrabee, Pauline Martin and Carmelene Brochu.

Calling hours will be held Monday, May 13, from 2-4 and 6-8PM at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday morning, May 14, at 10AM at St. Anthony's Church in White River Jct., VT. with a luncheon to follow downstairs in the church hall. Burial will be held later at 3PM at the Fairview Cemetery in Hardwick, VT Memorial contributions maybe made to Silver Towers, C/O Hartford Elks, P.O. Box 502, Hartford, VT 05047.
