Louisa Margaret Bristow Simpson Reed Allred
Birth: Mar. 12, 1826
Warrick County
Indiana, USA
Death: May 12, 1911
Madison County
Arkansas, USA

Louisa was the daughter of William Bristow b.abt 1797-1800 most likely in Middlesex Co., VA & d.bef 1850 & Sarah ___(Unknown) b.abt 1797-1803 most likely in VA & d. aft 1850 and who were married abt 1818 in KY. No one is sure about the maiden name of Sarah.

While Louisa's gravestone lists the birth year of 1826, it is most likely she was born in 1831, according to Federal Census. In addition, the gravestone says Louisa Alridge, which should read Louisa Allred. This gravestone was produced in extremely remote and rural Arkansas and no one could spell back then.

The middle name of Louisa is reported as Margaret in memoirs of Jennifer Lee (Reed) Lawrence of Latimer Co., OK, daughter of Sherman Monroe Reed, oldest son of Louisa's Reed Family. She noted this middle name after being requested for information about her Reed family from other family members. It is the only instance of a middle name I have seen written, but makes sense since Louisa also gave that middle name to a daughter and also used the middle initial "M" on one other daughter and one son.

Louisa was married 3 times.

Marriage #1: William Hamilton Simpson, 1825-1829 in Warrick Co., IN & d.unknown was married on 18 May 1848 in Warrick Co.,Indiana.

It is unknown when, where, or how William Hamilton Simpson died, however, he was last reported living in Cape Giradeau, Cape Giradeau County, MO on 30 Jun 1860. Based on the time period, it is generally believed he was killed during the Civil War, but I have yet to see any substantial proof or any documentation of his death or where he is buried. The Battle of Cape Giardeau, MO occurred in Apr 1863. Odds are, he died then or sometime afterwards.

No children

In 1910, according to Federal Census, Louisa can be found living in LeFlore County, Oklahoma between two families.

The first family she is living with is Elijah Poe & America (Simpson) Bailey. America (Simpson) Bailey was Louisa's daughter by her first husband, William Hamilton Simpson. America died sometime in 1910.

The second family is Lloyd & Cora May (Simpson) Metcalf. Cora May Simpson was the daughter of William Green Simpson, who was the youngest son of the Simpson family. Louisa had helped William Green raise Cora May after his 1st wife, Elizabeth Cooper, died in 1899.

After America Simpson's death on May 1910, Louisa traveled, probably by train, to Madison County, Arkansas, to live with or visit another daughter, Mary Margaret (Simpson) Shrode and her husband Benton B. Shrode. It was here that she died at 80 years of age.

Louisa died at Pettigrew, Madison County, Arkansas, on 12 May 1911, while living with Mary Margaret & Benton Shrode. Benton Shrode died 1 March 1915 and is buried beside Louisa Allred in the Watson Cemetery. It is likely Mary Margaret Simpson Shrode, her daughter is buried on the other side of Benton in a sandstone head/foot marked grave.

I might note that I picked up the gravestone and transported it back to my home in Alabama, cleaned it, repaired it, and returned it to Watson Cemetery in Mar 2012. I cleared the area of their graves of heavy brush and overgrowth, and left them to the peace of that beautiful mountain area.

Not Lost Blest Thought, But Gone Before Where We Shall Meet To Part No More

Note: I am happy to report that I was able to clean, repair this gravestone, and more properly mount it into the ground, rather than on top of the ground, so as not to be knocked over and broken again. - Bob Akins
