Walter "Bus" Briscoe of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on May 25, 1929, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Ora V. and Hopal V (Matthew) Briscoe. He married Jetta Prather on January 14, 1956, and she survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Gale Briscoe and Susan Hughett, both of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Bonnie Duncan of Bedford, IN; six brothers: Louis "Doodle" Briscoe of Bedford, IN, Robert Briscoe of Bloomington, IN, and Wilbur Briscoe, Leroy Briscoe, Richard Briscoe, and Basil Bricoe, all of Mitchell, IN; five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by three sisters: Ruby Smith, Fern Watson, and Frances Briscoe; and one brother, James Briscoe.

He was owner of Briscoe Car and Van Rentals and the founding father and general manager of Mitchell Motor Sales and Burton Family Bus Sales since 1949 and was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a charter and longtime member of the Ford Motor Company 300-500 Sales Masters Club/Car and Truck Division; #1 Ford School Bus Chassis Salesperson, and Certified Sales Professional-Ford Heavy Truck. He had received numerous sales awards from Carpenter Body Works. He was a member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F&AM, LaOrMa Shrine Club, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, Murat Temple, Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post #250 and Marvin R. Davis Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #9107.

Services for Walter Briscoe will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 12th, at the Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Kirkman officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery with military rites accorded by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post #250 and Marvin R Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9107. Friends may call fr9om 2-8:30 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service time on Wednesday at the funeral home. Masonic rites will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday by Masonic Lodge #14 F&AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mitchell Community Schools Scholarship Foundation in care of the funeral home.
