Mary Jane Brewer is born the fifth of seven children who live to adulthood who are the offspring of Philo Brewer. Mary Jane Brewer is the only one of her siblings to remain in New York when the rest of her siblings and father move west, to Wisconsin. Mary Jane Brewer marries James H. Barrus, and they live in Clay, Onondaga County, NY. They have one son together, Warren C. Barrus. Mary Jane Barrus outlives her husband by two years. She dies of typhoid fever in 1902, at the age of 72.
