Enlisted, December 20, 1915, in Troop D, Squadron A Cavalry, New York City. Mustered-in for Mexican border service with Troop D, Squadron A Cavalry, June 30, 1916. Squadron A was stationed at Camp McAllen, Texas, with the New York Division. He returned to New York with Troop D from border service, December 23, 1916, and mustered out of border service, December 28, 1916.

World War 1, attended OTC at Plattsburg Barracks, NY and commissioned, 2nf Lieutenant, Infantry, August 15, 1917, promoted 1st Lieutenant, Jan. 12, 1918 and Captain, Aug. 22, 1918. He was assigned to Headquarters Troop, 77th Division, Camp Upton, NY. Shipped out for Europe, March 29, 1918, with the advance elements of the 77th Division. The 77th Division saw continuous combat during the war. He returned to the States, April 25, 1919 and discharged from the service May 12, 1919.
