December 14, 1908 - March 23, 2007 Horace Brayshaw's long and productive life spanned the 20th century. Born in Chicago, IL in 1908 to parents who died soon after, he was reared by family and friends to a life of duty and achieve- ment. He spent his early years in Faribault, MN where he graduated from high school in 1928. In 1933 he graduated from the University of Minnesota Dental School and married Lucile Voegele of Faribault. He practiced dentistry there and together they raised three sons. Horace answered the call to duty in December 1941 and joined the U.S. Army Dental Corps, landing with forces at Leyte Bay that liberated the Philippines. He remained in the Army after WWII and served at Army teaching hospitals, including at Fitzsimmons Hospital, until retirement in 1962. He returned to Denver to practice dentistry until retiring again in 1979. Recalling his challenges in early life as an orphan he devoted himself to passing his knowledge on to the young. He strongly supported scouting, leav- ing an imprint on many youths. In 1950, he sponsored a beautification of the Fitzsimmons grounds, add- ing an avenue of fine Blue Spruce trees between the Hospital and Colfax Avenue that remains today. He pioneered new treatments in Periodontia and created training programs for young dentists in the U.S. Army while teaching at several teaching hospitals and dental schools. He lost is beloved wife Lucile to Multiple Sclerosis in 1971. He married Elizabeth Vosburgh in 1980 and the two shared a rich life with their sons' families and friends, traveling widely until her death in 2003. In retirement he continued his commitment to the young and education through support for scholarship programs at universities attended by himself and his sons. He was a member of the President's Club of the University of Minnesota. Horace is survived by his sons Robert of Houston, TX, William of Denver, CO, and Charles of Centennial, WY, daughters-in-laws Susan and Joellen, six grand- children, four great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. In lieu of flowers, contributions would be welcomed for the Multiple Sclerosis National Society, Colorado Chapter, the American Heart Association, and the Hemophilia Society of Colorado.
