It is with a sense of deep regret and sadness we announce the passing of Lillie O. Auvil on January 26, 2005. At the time of her death she was 95 years old and a 71 year resident of Orondo, WA.
Lillie Ora Brandt was born at home, July 6, 1909, in Mesa, WA to Louis and Anna Brandt, both originally from Selinger, Germany. As a baby, she moved with her family to Withrow, WA where her father had purchased a wheat ranch. At the age of 2 1/2 her mother died, and due to the large number of children in the family, she was sent to live with her paternal grandparents in Sibley, IL, a small German settlement where her parents had grown up. Her younger brother and sister went to live with an aunt in Richland, WA while the others remained to help care for the home and ranch. Her father kept in touch with all the children and eventually remarried Ruth Burwell of Spokane. He gradually brought the children back home, but by this time, Lillie and her grandparents were so attached, it was decided she should remain in Sibley.
In personal journals, Lillie speaks with love of her grandparents, family, friends and neighbors that were such a big part of her youth. She spent many summers in the country with her aunts, uncles and cousins, loving the fact there was so much to see and do, and so many kids to play with. Her first language was German, gradually switching to English as she approached school age. She was active in the Lutheran Church, singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school throughout her high school years. By the time of her graduation from Sibley High in 1927, she had lost both of her grandparents and was living with an aunt and uncle. She left Sibley in 1928, to travel west for a joyful reunion with her immediate family to whom she grew very close over the years. With her father's encouragement, she used the inheritance from her grandfather to attend Eastern State College in Cheney, WA and graduated in 1930, with a teaching degree in primary education. During her college years, she spent the majority of her free time working toward her certification in teaching the Palmer Method of Business Writing which she completed in May of 1929. She felt any job was a blessing during the Depression and took the first one offered which was in Douglas County at Dyer Hill. The following year she accepted a position in Withrow where she remained for 3 years. The vast majority of her teaching salary went to support her sister Marie, who was also completing her college education at Eastern State. It was during this time her sister Ella, who worked at the Oatey orchard in Orondo, introduced her to the young foreman, Grady Auvil. Although Lillie turned down his first proposal of marriage, he persisted and they were married in 1934, shortly after the death of her father. After their honeymoon at Lake Wenatchee, she returned to their new home in Orondo and began the hard work of orchard life, cooking for all the employed bachelors. She helped Grady and his brothers start Auvil Fruit Company by cashing out her teaching vouchers, which had a value of $2,000 at the time. She was married to Grady for 64 years until his death in 1998.
Although her home was her priority, Lillie had numerous interests. She was a member of the Orondo Grange and Auxiliary for 66 years and a long time member of the Wenatchee Garden Club and the Orondo Ladies' Club until her health prevented her from participating.
Her parents and grandparents, her six siblings and her beloved husband Grady, preceded her in death. She is survived by her 3 children, Deanna (Bert) Navone of East Wenatchee, Allen (Patti) Auvil of Kirkland and John (Pam) Auvil of Orondo; 9 grandchildren, Anna (Jim) Wright of Orondo, Laura Navone of East Wenatchee, Jenny (Mike) Vannier of East Wenatchee, Grady (Heidi) Auvil of Newcastle, Tammy (Steve) Sully of Bothell, Mike (Michelle) Auvil of Wenatchee, David (Jana) Auvil of Wenatchee, Jessica (D.J.) Osborn of Burlington and Rachel (Joel) Smith of East Wenatchee; as well as 16 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express a special thanks to Phyllis Perkins, Lillie's friend, companion and caregiver of 9 years, whose love and loyalty allowed Lillie to live her final years with dignity in the comfort of her own home. No words could adequately express the gratitude and appreciation felt for all she did, the sacrifices she made, the extraordinary time spent ensuring Lillie was lovingly cared for at the time in her life when she needed it most. We will forever be indebted.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 28, 2005, at Telford's Chapel of the Valley in East Wenatchee. The service will conclude at the chapel, with private Interment at the Orondo Cemetery.
