George Brandau was born in Germany in 1836, the son of Paul and Martha Brandau. The family located in Orland Township in 1856. In 1862, George enlisted in Co. F., 199th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and participated in the battles of Stone River, Resaca, Dallas, Kenesaw Mountain, Franklin, Nashville and other engagements of his command. He received a gunshot wound through his right arm at the battle of Dallas and was disabled for one month. At the battle of Franklin, he was wounded again by a gunshot wound to the left arm. He served until the end of the war. In 1860 he married Elizbeth Borlie, and they were members of the M.E. German Church. They had two children Katherina and Mary.

Following Elizabeth's death, George married 18 year old Katherine Heisner on April 17, 1893. George and Katherine had three children, George Paul, Walter William, and Laura Sophie.
