Longtime Auburn [California] resident Floyd Harvey Dolley passed away Tuesday July 15, 2014 after a long battle with Alzheimer's.
Floyd was born June 10th 1934. He was raised in a log cabin in Vasselboro, Maine. No water or flushing toilets meant a home improvement was when the outhouse was upgraded to a "two holer." He was raised by his Grandmother and Grandfather Dolley. At the age of 12 Floyd set out on his life's adventure. At 15 he lied about his age and joined the Navy where he became an Underwater Demolition Expert- today this work is done by the Navy Seals. He served in the Korean War but was discharged after he disobeyed a commanding officer's orders and went back to save his best friend's life. When he was brought up on charges for disobeying an order and saving a man's life, in true Floyd fashion he laughed, and told them they can't do anything to an underage kid, as a result he was given a general discharge and sent home.
Floyd returned home, walked into the Air Force recruiting office and joined the Air Force. He spent the next few months landing planes in Greenland and Germany before it was discovered that he had previous military service and he was sent home.
He returned home to Maine and married his first wife Dolores. He spent the next 20 years living a wild and crazy life. Stories that would make the Dukes of Hazard seem tame. Racing cars, running from the cops, flying planes and running moonshine just begin to paint the picture. Floyd and Dolores moved to California and adopted his first child, Lorna Marie. In the late 60's Floyd and Dolores divorced.
In 1969 Floyd met the love and beginning of his life, a red headed switch board operator at the Gledhill Chevrolet Dealership that he was the Service Manager at. Floyd married Lillian Diane Tvedt July 9, 1970. Their love inspired many more adventures. In 1971 Floyd and Diane welcomed their son Jerry. In 1974 they welcomed a daughter Patricia.
In 1975 Floyd and family moved to Auburn when Floyd took a Service Managers job at Lee Chase Chevrolet in Auburn. They bought a home in North Auburn that would be his final home. Floyd left his service managers job in the late 70's to open a business out of the barn at the family's home. This allowed him to make his own schedule and spend so much time with his family. Dolley's Automotive was an established brick and mortar auto shop that ran for 15 years before the toll of hard work returned Floyd to an outside sales position for various automotive suppliers in the area.
Floyd retired in the late 90's, but not from adventuring. Diane and Floyd spent time on the road traveling and exploring the US. Whether it was on a motorcycle, motor home or truck and 5th wheel, Floyd and Diane tried to see it all. The only thing that slowed him down was the arrival of his beloved grandchildren.
For the last 15 years of his life he was known to many as Big Papa, a name given to him by his seven grandchildren. Wyatt, Amanda, Evan, Grace, Jack, Cole and Luke were about the only thing that could pry his attention from Diane.
Floyd is survived by: his wife and best friend Diane of 44 years. Daughter Lorna and son-in-law Mike Eby of Roseville. Son Jerry and daughter-in-law Marjorie Dolley of Auburn. Daughter Patricia and son-in-law Chris Thomas of Auburn. He is also survived by his sister Franka Bickford of Maine. Brothers Jerry, Rick and Kenny of Maine.
