Wife of Civil War Veteran, Elijah Bradley.

MRS MARY E BRADLEY
The following article which appeared in the Jetmore, Kansas, Republican, Friday, November 14, has reference to one who formerly lived in and was well-known in this vicinity. The late Elijah P Bradley, husband of the deceased, was an uncle of Mrs. J A Bussey.

"Old-time resident of Jetmore and widow of the late Elijah P Bardley(sic), a former business man of Jetmore, and representive(sic) of Hodgeman county, passes away at Long Beach, Calif.

"Word has been received by friends in Jetmore that Mrs. Mary E Bradley, a pioneer mother and resident of Jetmore, passed away at her home in Long Beach, California, on November 8, 1930, and was laid to rest beside her husband in Sunyyside(sic) cemetery at Long Beach, on November 6.

"Mrs. Bradley was born in Lee County, Iowa, June 13, 1842, and was 88 years old at the time of her death. She obtained her education in the public schools in Marion county, IA, and after graduating, taught school there a number of years before her marriage to Elijah P Bradley on July 4, 1865. She was united with the Christian church at Bluff Creek, Iowa, when quite young and was baptized by the Rev Freeman Walden.

"After her marriage to Mr Bradley they resided in Knoxville, Iowa, until the year of 1885 when they came west with the tide of immigration with the avowed intention and purpose of seeking a home in a new country and to help develope then the trackless plains of western Kansas. The family consisted of Mr and Mrs Bradley and five children, namely, William S Bradley who was later associated with his father in the feed and coal business in Jetmore under the firm name and style of E P Bradley & Son and who died in 1894, Lillie A who was more familiarly known as Della and who is now Mrs James W Winn; Nettie B, who is now Mrs John L Wyatt; and Albert L all of Long Beach, California and Carrie L who is now Mrs George H Duncan of Larned, Kansas.

"They settled in Hodgeman county and here they began to live the crude life peculiar to the pioneers. They opened a feed and coal business which they carried on under adverse conditions as there was no railroad here and their merchandise had to be freighted across the country from Spearville.

"Later, Mrs Bradley conducted a millinery store in Jetmore, which business she operated for a number of years.

"In 1908(?) Mr and Mrs Bradley removed to Long Beach, California, where they might enjoy the benefits of a more delightful climate and where they might spend their remaining days in comfort. But in the latter part of her life she was poorly and for eleven months was bedfast most of the time, part of the time with two nurses in attendance and the last few months with a nurse and a housekeeper. Her passing leaves a big gap as her life centered in her family as they had always been around her.

"Mrs Bradley while here was very active in the Woman's Reliefe Corps and made special efforts to attend the encamptment of the GAR and WRC. She was a mother to the motherless and was always found active in looking after the comforts of the needy. She contributed her time to those in distress and administered to the sick and suffering. She was a mother to her nephews and nieces who were left orphans by their mother's death as well as a mother to her own children and in her demise she leaves many friends in Hodgeman county who will remember with pleasure the many kindly deeds she performed while living and will regret to learn of her untimely death.
