Civil War veteran
Private, Co. B, 3rd Massachusetts Infantry
Private, 19th Co. Unattached Massachusetts Infantry

A 25-year-old unmarried Plymouth, MA Broker, Ebenezer enlisted in the army on Sep. 19, 1862 and was mustered a week later as a Private in Co. B of the 3rd Massachusetts Infantry. His regiment was deployed to North Carolina, arriving at Beaufort on October 26th and from there moved to New Bern. The regiment was involved in the Goldsboro expedition in December and engaged in two fire fights, one at Kinston and the second at Whitehall, where two from the regiment were killed. In Jan. 1863 they manned Fort Totten, part of the New Bern defenses and remained there until they returned to Boston on June 16th. Three months later, while Charles was enjoying a return to civilian life, a Yellow Fever epidemic swept through New Bern claiming as victims hundreds of civilians and Union soldiers alike.

Not content to remain on the sidelines and with a large bounty being waved in his face, Ebenezer enlisted again and this time mustered as a Private in the 19th Company of Unattached Massachusetts Infantry on Aug. 9, 1864. This regiment, sworn into service for a 100-day term, manned Fort Warren in Boston Harbor until Nov. 16th when they were mustered out and members returned to civilian life.
