Barbara May Brackin

Barbara M. Brackin, 89, of Marianna died Friday, August 21, 2015 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.

A native of Dothan AL, Mrs. Brackin resided in Dothan until 1966 when she moved to Havana, Florida. In 1971 she moved to Marianna. She was a member of Marianna First United Methodist Church.

She was employed in Dothan at the Houston County Health Department, in Tallahassee at the Department of Natural Resources and in Marianna at the Jackson County Health Department. She and husband, Grady, enjoyed traveling. They even spent several years as campground hosts at Vogel State park in North Georgia.

She loved going to the mountains and in 2000 she and Grady eventually built a cabin near Blairsville. She really enjoyed shopping at Alexander's Store, but her greatest joy was her family. She attended the high school graduation of every grandchild and made frequent visits to both children and grandchildren whenever the opportunity existed. She had a flair for life greater than most. She was always planning for the next big family get-together, figuring out sleeping arrangements, meals, and when we could sing. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Cauza May, and two brothers, Ben Jr, and Wayman all of Dothan.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Grady Brackin; three sons and a daughter - Ray Barber (Patti) and Randy Barber (Darlene) of Tifton GA, Earl Brackin (Lisa) of Calhoun GA, and Jody Burke (Bo) of Marianna. Twelve grandchildren – Ben Burke (Kara) of Baltimore MD, Annah Kate Goodnight (Peter) of Charleston SC, Daniel Burke of Birmingham AL, Mandy White (Ben) of Cincinnati OH, Leah Melchers (Ted) of Charleston SC, Austin Barber (Cara) of Little Rock AR, Jonathan Barber (Brittney) of Chattanooga TN, Natalie Keadle (Walker) of Athens GA, Sarah Barber, Lawson Barber and Maria Barber all of Roswell GA, and Bea Brackin of Calhoun GA; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, August 24, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Marianna with Revs. Bill Elwell & Doug Newton officiating. Interment will follow in the Dothan City Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel of Marianna directing.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church in the sanctuary.

Serving as Pallbearers will be Daniel Burke, Austin Barber, Jonathan Barber, Peter Goodnight, Walker Keadle, and Ted Melchers.

The family will be gathering at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Henry (Bo) and Jody Burke.
