Born in Kilkenny, Ireland, an only son of Richard and Ann Boyle, migrated with his mother to Canada in 1819 where she died.. He came to Southwick in 1826.

His first wife, Betsy, died young leaving him with a son Robert (2 yrs. old) and Robert, just a baby. He then married Betsy's sister, Emily who bore him 4 sons, 3 who died of scarlet fever.

At some point, John and his family moved to Jamaica, L.I. and lived there for several years. He then returned to Southwick.
