First husband Francis (Frank) A. Kirkpatrick, Baltimore, Maryland (20 Sep 1883 - Mar 1957)

Dr. Esther Boyer Bauer, 92, recognized national leader with the Church of God, died Jan 24, 1998 at her hoe in Anderson.

Born in Melvern, Kan, on Dec 21 1905, to William and Nellie (Lane) Boyer, Dr. Bauer graduated from Anderson Bible Training School, now Anderson University. She attended Union Theological Seminary, the University of Maryland, Hanna Theological Seminary at Wittenberg University and Columbia University, New York, N. Y.

Ordained into the ministry shortly following graduation, she served 50 years as pastor, minister of Christian education and minister of pastoral care. She invested a great deal of time in the ministry and outreach of older adults. After her retirement, she led numerous workshops and forums on these subjects.

For the church at large she served as a field secretary for the National Board of Christian Education and later as director of children's ministry with the National Board of Christian Education. She was a director of that board and its chairman.

At Warner Press, she assumed the title of director of curriculum services.

She pastored churches in Baltimore, Md, Washington, DC and served as assistant pastor in Springfield, Ohio. The Washington, D C pastorate was a project of the National Board of Church Extension and Home Missions. Under her leadership, a major congregation was formed, which resulted in a significant new church facility.

Dr. Bauer received numerous honors, including "Who's Who in Religion" the doctor of divinity degree from Anderson University, the Distinguished Alumni Award from Anderson University Alumni Association and upon retiring from an 11 year tenure as trustee, was voted the first trustee emeritus of the university.

She was a contributing author of numerous articles for Christian education publications and was widely sought after as a speaker in her field.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Nellie (Lane) Boyer, five brothers, Leonard, John, Dr. Harold, Alvin and Lawrence Boyer, her first husband, Francis Kirkpatrick, in 1957, and her second husband, R. Glover Bauer Jr., who was an insurance executive from Baltimore in 1988.

The Bauers had made their home in Anderson since 1968. They were married Aug 22 1968.

Service will be 11am Wednesday at Park Place Church of God. Burial will be in East Maplewood Cemetery.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm Tuesday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
