Jean was born in 1916.
Her father was a Presbyterian minister with Parishes in the Midwest.
She attended a number of schools in Kansas City and St.Louis and graduated from Belleville High School in 1933. Jean attended Duke University from 1933-1935 and received her A.B. from the University of Chicago in June 1937. Jean continued her studies at the
Graduate Teachers College in Winnetka and
received a Master's degree in Education.
Between 1938-1942, Jean taught third grade in two private elementary schools in Montreal and Cleveland.
On June 14, 1941 Jean was married to
Dr. G. Burton Appleford in Dover, New Hampshire. Jean's father
officiated at the marriage ceremony.
One of her earliest relatives was the
first provincial governor of New Hampshire
hence the reason for selecting Dover as the
location of their wedding.
During World War II when her husband was in
the Army Air Corps in Italy, she remained in
Massachusetts where her first daughter Jane
was born in 1944. Her second daughter Nancy
was born in 1947. Jean participated in church
activities over the years in the various
communities where she and her family lived-
Ware and Pittsfield in Massachusetts, Kansas
City and San Diego. During her years in San
Diego, she was a member of the La Jolla
Presbyterian Church, worked in the church
library and tutored elementary school
children in english, reading and math.
Jean was also a member of the Social Service League of La Jolla and helped supervise weddings at the League House.
Jean enjoyed sailing and cruising with her
husband, visiting family and friends and
spending time with her 4 grandchildren.
Jean and her husband celebrated 64
years of marriage just one month before her
death in 2005.
