Clara Lanier Bowen, 96, of Statesboro, Georgia passed away Dec. 26, 2010. A native of Bulloch County. She was born Nov. 30, 1914. She was the daughter of the late Remer Dekle and Bennie Beatrice Atwood Lanier. After graduating from Statesboro High School and Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia, she taught school in Folkston, Ga., then moved to Atlanta where she worked in the business field until she returned to Bulloch County to care for her parents in their declining years.
She loved to play bridge and was a superb cook using the Southern recipes handed down from her mother including fried catfish, hush puppies and cheese grits that were favorites of her family. She was a member of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church and a favorite in the Bible Study group at church. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.B. Bowen of Register, GA as well as brothers Roy Denver, Remer Dekle Jr., James Walton, Willis Powell, Bernard, Felton Rodney, and one sister Bertie.
She is survived by two stepsons, Benton Bowen of Griffin and Trapnall Bowen of Milledgeville. Mrs. Bowen was very involved in the lives of her 10 nieces and nephews, Willis P. Lanier, Jr. of Roanoke, VA, Donald Plant Lanier of Fayetteville, Jo Nelle Lanier Morales of Plano, TX, Linda Lanier Dunlap of Winter Park, FL, Sandra Lanier Degarceau of Manhattan Beach, CA, Diane Lanier Blackwelder of Charlotte, NC, James Dekle Lanier of Brunswick, Sharon Lanier Burleson of Charlotte, NC, Felton Rodney Lanier of Asheville, NC, and Bernard Thomas Lanier of Savannah.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 28, 2010 from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home with Elder Randy Waters and Elder Jack Anderson officiating.
Burial will be at Lower Lotts Creek Primitive Baptist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make your contributions to your favorite charity.
The nieces and nephews wish to thank the employees at Southern Manor Retirement Inn, Brown's Nursing Home and Odessey Hospice for their kind and loving care of our Aunt.
Also, many thanks to Missie Chester, Barbara Owens, and the other sitters who have lovingly cared for our Aunt.
