Bernard L. Boteler Sr. 97, who retired in 1970 after a half-century career with what became International Business Machines Corp.,died of a heart ailment Jan. 2 at his home in Olney.
Mr. Boteler, who had lived in Olney since 2000 and in Kensington the previous 47 years, was a fourth-generation native Washingtonian. He began his career in 1921 as a teenage card-printing operator for the old Tabulating Machine Co., a forerunner of IBM.
He served as general office manager of the Washington card plant and later as senior purchasing officer in the company's federal systems division.
During World War II, he served as an IBM liaison to the Veterans Administration and the Census Bureau.
He had helped organize IBM national conventions and social clubs for employees. He had played sandlot baseball and football for the Knickerbockers in the Industrial League in his earlier years.
Mr. Boteler was a member of the Washington Board of Trade and the Washington Purchasing Agents Association. He was co-founder of the Free State Seniors Golf Association and charter member and board member of Lakewood Country Club in Rockville.
His first wife, Katherine Rose Stanton Boteler, died in 1943, and his second wife, Alma Elizabeth Albertson Boteler,died in 2001. A son by his first marriage, Bernard Jr., died in 1973.
Survivors include two children from his first marriage, Rose Mary McAleer of Ocean Pines, Md., and J.Stanton Boteler of Olney; two children from his second marriage, R. Eugene Boteler of Brinklow, Md., and Mary Elizabeth DeMattia of Mount Airy, Md.; a sister, Annie A. Brown of Hagerstown, Md.; three brothers, Millard J., of Fairfax Station, Earl A. Sr., of Alexandria,and Lawrence H., of McLean; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.

On Thursday, January 2, 2003, BERNARD L. BOTELER, SR. passed peacefully to eternal life at his home in Olney, MD. He was predeceased by his first wife of 17 years, Kathrine Rose Stanton Boteler, by his son, Bernard L. Boteler Jr., by his second wife of fifty seven years, Alma Elizabeth Albertson Boteler; and by his brother, Gordon R. Boteler. He is the beloved father of Rose Mary McAleer (Jack), J. Stanton Boteler, R. Eugene Boteler (Mary), and Mary Elizabeth DeMattia (Anthony). He is also survived by his only sister, Annie A. Brown of Hagerstown, MD and by his brothers, Millard J. Boteler of Fairfax Station, VA, Earl A. Boteler Sr. of Alexandria, VA and Lawrence H. Boteler of McLean, VA. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and two great great grandsons. The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Patrick's Church, Norbeck and Muncaster Mill Roads, Norbeck, MD on Sunday, 2 to 5 p.m. and on Monday, January 6, from 10 to 11 a.m. with Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
