His given name was Gabriel Bossler, known as James Bosler in the United States. He was the son of Jean George Bossler and Catherine Geoffroy. James was born in Petit Eich, Reding, Moselle, Lorraine, France. He emigrated to the United States aboard the ship Bayard with his father and step mother Marie Barbe Ansett Bossler. There were nine children on board the Bayard, five from his father's first marriage and four from his father's second marriage. The Bayard arrived in New York on December 31, 1832. James married Anna Hanners, daughter of Robert Hanners and Anna Marshal on October 15, 1845. To this union, nine children were born: George M, John Otis, Hattie M, Sarah Augusta, Mary Ella, William, Anna Belle, James H, and Frank.

James was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted in Company K 142nd New York Volunteer on September 7, 1864 and was honorably discharged on June 1 1865.
