Edward "Gene" Bookless, age 87, passed peacefully at home from a combination of heart failure and pneumonia on February 9, 2014. Edward was born on a farm in Reno County outside of Nickerson, KS on June 4, 1926, the son of Cleo (VanSickle) and Ross Bookless. Edward and Ruth Steel were married in Manhatten, KS on January 8, 1951. Edward was a soil scientist for the United States Government, Department of the Bureau of Indian Affairs until he retired in 1986 and eventually moved to Rio Rancho to be close to his children. Edward enjoyed fishing, traveling, woodworking, gardening and spending time with his family. Edward was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Eldon and Harry his sister, Carol Switzer and his eldest son, Lloyd. Edward leaves behind his loving wife, Ruth, children, Ross (Elvira), Edward, Anita (Larry) Vasey, Lloyd's wife, Jerilyn, two granddaughters, Gina and Amy, two great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Ethan and his sister, Mary (Gordon) Tempero of Topeka. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to your local chapter of the American Diabetes Association. There will be no memorial service held in Rio Rancho but a short graveside memorial will be held in his hometown of Nickerson, KS on June 7, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wildmead Cemetery, Nickerson, KS.
