Amos was a well known hotel keeper in Lawrenceburg until he moved to New Albany where he became a boat pilot on the Ohio River. He served in the Mississippi Squadron of the US Navy during the Civil War and was involved in the capture of Fort Hindman (Arkansas Post). After the war he returned to New Albany to continue in his occupation. He died aboard the steamer Emma Floyd while it was docked at Evansville.
